Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
In Sūrah Al-hijr verses 9:
((إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ))
“Surely We have revealed this reminder (The Qur’an); and We will surely preserve it Ourself”
Why is the plural form ‘We’ used to refer to Allah, even though Allah is one and singular?
Answer:
The personal plural pronoun (we) is not used to denote a number rather it is used to illustrate magnification and greatness, similar to how the language expressed by kings and royals when speaking, they say we did this, rather than saying i did to demonstrate might and power. This can be found in many places in the Quran. However, two more examples are provided for further explanation:
1)
Sūrah Al-hijr verses 8:
((وإِنَّا لَجَـٰعِلُونَ مَا عَلَیۡهَا صَعِیدࣰا جُرُزًا))
“And we will surely make what (is) on it barren plain”.
2)
Sūrah Al-aşr verses 1:
((إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ))
“And indeed, we have granted you abundance”.
وقال الرازي في تفسيره: فأما قوله: (إنا نحن نزلنا الذكر) فهذه الصيغة -وإن كانت للجمع- إلا أن هذا من كلام الملوك عند إظهار التعظيم؛ فإن الواحد منهم إذا فعل فعلًا، أو قال قولًا قال: إنا فعلنا كذا، وقلنا كذا، فكذا ها هنا. اهـ.
وقال الأمين الشنقيطي في العذب النمير: وصيغة الجمع للتعظيم، كقوله: {إنا نحن نزلنا الذكر} [الحجر:9]، {إنا نحن نحيي الموتى} [يس:12]، وهو جل وعلا واحد، إلا أنه يعبّر عن نفسه بصيغة الجمع؛ لأجل التعظيم والإجلال. اه
