Question:
In the verse فقد صغت قلوبكما (Surah al-Taḥrīm, 66:4), why is the word قلوب (hearts – plural) used when the pronoun -كما refers to two people? Why wasn’t the dual form قلبان or قلباكما used?
Answer:
In Arabic, when two words are closely linked both semantically (in meaning) and literally (in grammatical structure), especially in an iḍāfah (possessive) construction, it is stylistically avoided to use both in the dual form. This is because combining two dual forms in such a tightly connected structure can sound heavy or awkward on the tongue.
Therefore, in expressions where a dual noun is annexed to a dual pronoun, the first word (the possessed noun) is often changed to the plural form—even if it refers to only two items—to avoid having two directly connected duals.
In this verse, the word قلوبكما (your hearts) reflects that قلوب is semantically connected to -كما because the heart is part of the person. It is also literally connected through the grammatical structure of possession (the iḍāfah). To avoid pairing قلبان with -كما, قلوب is used instead, following a known stylistic tendency in Arabic.
A similar case occurs in Surah al-Mā’idah (5:33):
فاقطعوا أيديهما – “So cut off their hands.”
Here, أيدي (hands – plural) is used even though -هما refers to two people. Since hands are both semantically part of the individuals and literally linked through the possessive structure, the noun أيدي is used in the plural instead of the dual يدين.
In both cases, the plural form is preferred to maintain smoothness of speech and avoid the heaviness of two directly connected duals.
And Allah knows best.
